It has that magic that is difficult to explain, perhaps because of the low buildings in the center of the city with its alpine style houses, the charm of Lake Lacar or its imposing viewpoints on both sides of the city.
It is a destination where you can do everything: skiing in Chapelco mountain in winter trekking routes in the mountains, going to the beaches of Lake Lacar, enjoying good Patagonian food and chocolates in the center of the city, and of course, making the panoramic route of the Seven Lakes.
The offer of hotels and cabins in San Martin de los Andes is numerous, and although in high season, both for skiing in winter and for enjoying the outdoors in summer, the place is full of tourists, there are always vacancies available.

Where is the best area to stay in San Martín de los Andes?
The city itself is not as big as Bariloche, so if you stay on the waterfront of Lake Lacar or near the restaurants, cafes and chocolate shops you will be in the center of town. This is undoubtedly the best area to stay in San Martin de los Andes if you want to eat outside the hotel, shop and taste handmade chocolates.
However, there are hotels and cabins in the surroundings, ideal if you have a car and to be in contact with nature. Most of these sites are located a few kilometers away from San Martín de los Andes, near Route 40, towards Junín de los Andes.
During our two visits to San Martin de los Andes we stayed in two different places, one in the center of the city, and the second time about five kilometers away from the city. We personally liked to stay more in the outskirts and go to downtown San Martin de los Andes by car.

Is San Martín de los Andes expensive to stay in?
Although prices are lower compared to cities in Patagonia Argentina located further south such as El Calafate or Ushuaia, San Martin de los Andes is more expensive than Bariloche for lodging.
The good thing is that there are places for all budgets, although you can hardly get a double room for less than USD 50 a night in high season.
If you are looking for superior accommodation in San Martin de los Andes, prices start at around USD 80/90 per night for two people.
In five-star hotels, the minimum is USD 300 per night for a double room.
Cheap hotels in downtown San Martín de los Andes
We have done a lot of research on where to stay in San Martin de los Andes during our two stays. The first time we went with a medium/low budget and without a car, so we looked for cheap hotels in the city center.
From our experience and where we finally stayed, we suggest these cheap hotels in San Martin de los Andes:
The Intermonti Hotel meets the three conditions: good, nice and cheap. We chose it for our first stay in San Martín de los Andes and were delighted with the staff’s treatment. While the breakfast is not as complete, the accommodation is a 10 in cleanliness and the rooms are very spacious and comfortable. It has been remodeled a few years ago, which can be seen in its wood floors and decoration. Besides, it is right in the center of San Martin de los Andes, another advantage.
One option we considered for a place to sleep in San Martín de los Andes in downtown San Martín de los Andes is the Cerro Nevado Inn. It is a large mansion that is very well priced in the center of the city, although its facilities lack a little renovation. The good thing is that it has not only double rooms, but also family rooms, being a good option to stay in San Martin de los Andes cheaply with children.
If you are looking for an economical lodging but farther away from the center of San Martín de los Andes, we recommend you the Bärenhaus Inn. The owner is a charming person and he himself prepares the sweets and breads that are served at breakfast. The lodge has simple rooms and a common room with a fireplace. Its location is paramount, from the windows you can see the surrounding hills and in winter it is a pleasure to see snow from here.
Are there any hostels in San Martín de los Andes? Of course it is. Ideal for those looking for something cheap or to share a room with other young travelers, there are several options in the city. We recommend these two hostels:
- Rukalhue: surrounded by a large green space and with a grill, this hostel is meters away from the shore of Lake Lacar and the city center. Spacious common areas to chat with other travelers and kitchen and refrigerator for common use. If you want more privacy, there are bungalows and double rooms at good prices.
- The other option we recommend is Alhue Patagonia Hostel also located downtown and near the bus terminal. The shared rooms are spacious, the staff is excellent and everything is clean.
Recommended hotels away from the center of San Martin de los Andes
Our second time in San Martin de los Andes we preferred to stay outside the downtown area since we were traveling with children and prioritized a place with a park and a little more outdoor life. From what we researched, we make two recommendations:
We chose the second time in San Martin de los Andes the Posada Quinen. We stayed in one of their bungalows during the off-season and loved it for its tranquility and comfort. Besides, being next to Route 40, it is only a five-minute drive to downtown San Martín de los Andes. The place has a garden in the central area with an outdoor swimming pool that only works in summer. The rooms and the dining room of the bungalows are spacious enough to be without problems with children if it rains. Its breakfast is complete with homemade products.
Rosas Blancas Apart Hotel is an option that we value for its excellent price for all the amenities it offers. Ideal for traveling as a couple or with families as it has small studios and bungalows with two or three bedrooms. Whichever one you choose, inside they are very spacious with their wooden architecture, equipped kitchen and even grill. In addition, the location, the views and the beautiful landscaped park with a swimming pool, give the accommodation that particular charm. If you want to rest, it is an alternative to value, both in winter and summer.

If you are on family vacations in San Martín de los Andes, the children have a playroom to entertain themselves.
For us, this accommodation is ideal if you visit San Martín de los Andes in the winter. Del Sauco Apart & Spa has modern facilities covered in wood, a heated pool ideal to relax after skiing or outdoor activities, spa with massages and beautiful views. In addition, everything is very well heated.
Luxury hotels in San Martín de los Andes
You have a high budget to travel to San Martin de los Andes. For us, two places with an excellent reputation and a lot of comfort are Loi Suites Chapelco Hotel and Patagonia Plaza Hotel.
Loi Suites Chapelco Hotel is the only five-star hotel in San Martín de los Andes. Prices start at USD 250 per night for a double room. Beyond its category, the environment where it is located is impressive, surrounded by the Patagonian forest and with rooms overlooking the golf course and the mountains. Of course, they offer all the comforts including spa and restaurant with exclusive wine cellar. It is also one of the closest hotels to Mount Chapelco.
If you are looking for something higher category but a little cheaper than the previous one, we recommend you to visit Plaza Patagonia in the center of the city. Modern, stylish with spa services, gym, sauna and more.
