25 kilometers north of Castro city, the head of the island of Chiloé, is the town of Dalcahue, famous for its artisan fair and the traditional customs that are still present among its inhabitants.

What are the Dalcahue’s kitchens or “cocinerías”?
If you are going to visit the Dalcahue kitchens, you should know that it is an enclosed area on the waterfront, built with the typical architecture of the island’s stilt houses. The structure on the outside resembles a boat with round windows where you can look out to sea while tasting some of the island’s delicacies.
There are more than 20 restaurants on site, so it is advisable to first take a walk to see what they offer and then choose the one you like best. All the kitchens are open so you can observe the cooking in the pots and how they prepare the products.
Once you choose what to eat, the place doesn’t have the traditional tables of any restaurant, but are large bars with wooden chairs around the kitchens and at the ends of the place.
What to eat if you visit Dalcahue’s kitchens
All the products that are cooked in the kitchen are fresh, especially the fish and seafood that are unloaded directly on the waterfront from the fishermen’s boats.
If you are going to visit Dalcahue’s kitchens you have to know that most of the dishes are from the region and you can taste authentic delicacies such as:
- Beef or poultry casserole
- Roasted and peeled chicken
- Paila marina
- Seafood stew
- Fish such as salmon and hake
- Roast heifer or lamb
- Stuffed potatoes
- Cheese or seafood empanadas
- Curanto
The price to eat a dish in the kitchens of Dalcahue is between 8,000 and 10,000 Chilean pesos.
Getting there to visit the Dalcahue’s kitchens
If you arrive by car or rental car, it is a half hour drive from Castro. By public transportation, there are frequent local buses between the two towns.
